Self Portrait // Week 2 // Project 52

This week my “Project 52″ theme challenged me to come up with a “Self Portrait.”  I tried a few pictures by myself, but in my heart, I see myself as a relationship photographer. It’s what I love to capture most of all. So, I pulled my boys onto the bed where I was attempting a lifestyle type of portrait and everything sort of fell in to place.

I believe that family and love brings out the essence of a person. I know I certainly feel better and more natural with them there with me. There’s something magical that happens when people embrace one another. I really believe that if the connection is strong, the photograph will be too.

For this photograph, I set up my camera on a tripod with my 50 mm 1.4, used a 480ex speedlight on manual inserted rather manually (read shoved through and balanced on a chair…) into an 8 foot octabank. Yep. I had an octabank in my bedroom! The octabank is placed to my left. Then, I bounced the light back at myself with a silver 42″ reflector. I triggered it all using pocketwizards and a timer at first. Then I switched to asking my husband to press the shutter at key moments. Thank you Andy!

Jen,
The photos came out great. Both of you alone and with your children. The set up looks good. Lighting and the environment. The love shown between you and your children is heartwarming. Your work has been getting better and better. Keep it up.

You read that right, Joe! I LOVE the octa. Now, to experiment with the alienbees. I might have to scale back to the ab400 instead of using my flash though. :)
